Rev. Matthew M. Jefferson, Jr., was the first African-American pastor of Inglewood First UMC in Inglewood, California. He passed away in 1992. His loving wife, Mrs. Mary Frances Johnson Jefferson, passed away on July 14, 2017. At her homegoing service on Saturday, August 12, 2017, Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough, Interim President-Dean, presented a resolution on behalf of Gammon Theological Seminary. Dr. Kimbrough preached a healing message at Inglewood First UMC the following day. He is pictured with Rev. and Mrs. Jefferson’s eldest daughter, Willa Jefferson-Stokes, the current pastor- - Rev. Victor Cyrus Franklin, his wife and two children.
In January 2019, Dr. Ken J. Walden, President-Dean, travelled to Inglewood, California and preached a powerful and insightful message for the morning service at Inglewood First UMC. He honored the legacy of Rev. and Mrs. Jefferson, as well as shared the deeply lasting and fruitful connectional heritage between Gammon and Inglewood First.
